About Me

My first career (18 years) was in the life insurance business; however, my passion has always been healing.  For years, I volunteered as a Certified First Responder for an Ambulance Corp. and at New York Presbyterian Hospital Emergency Room in NYC.  I graduated from the IM School of Healing Arts in 2000 and followed up with two years of supervision.

After 9/11, I moved out of New York City and changed careers. I trained and became licensed and certified in a variety of healing modalities, including craniosacral therapy.  I started my practice offering healing touch and craniosacral therapy sessions.   I attended Fordham University and earned a Master's in Social Work.  I worked at Silver Hill Hospital (a psychiatric hospital), NY Presbyterian Hospital (in a psychiatric unit) and My Second Home (an adult daycare facility for older adults).  After years of working in traditional mental health settings, I quickly recognized that there was a good percentage of patients who needed an integrative approach.  Many needed relational treatment to repair relational issues. With Silver Hill's support, I designed, implemented and managed their Wellness Center, where body-based therapeutic services were offered.

Somatic Experiencing shifted my focus and my private practice.  Today, I have a better understanding of how the heart, body, nervous system and spirit heal as one.

Healing from trauma, be it big or small, is possible and together we work to “re-awaken” the body's natural and inherent ability to heal.

Blessings,

Valerie Candela
